Mother of 6 children killed by drunk driver on way home from visiting her newborn twins at hospital

(Scroll down for video) A family is mourning the loss of their mother who was killed by a suspected female drunk driver.

37-year-old Katie Evans, who was a mother of 6 children, was returning to her home in Santa Clarita, California, when a woman sideswiped a car and then smashed into her vehicle.

Evans was on her way home from a hospital, where she had spent time with her premature twins Hannah and Sarah, who are 8 weeks old.

The children's aunt, Natalie Mortensen, created a YouCaring account to help the family.

The initial goal was to raise $100,000. However, the family was shown an outpouring of love by strangers and they quickly raised double that amount.

They have now increased the goal amount to $500,000.

Mortensen wrote that Evens was just a mile from her home when she was killed. She leaves behind her husband Jacob, her children Spencer, 12, Travis, 11, Nathaniel, 9, Gideon, 2, and her 8-week-old twin girls Hannah and Sarah.

"Katie couldn't go a day without visiting her brand-new twin girls in the hospital. She was a devoted mother, sister and wife, and will be immensely missed.

"Jacob is left to care for 6 kids by himself. There will be many childcare costs as well as unforeseen expenses. We know many would like to help, but don't know how to, or are too far away to help in person. If you would like to donate towards childcare and other expenses, you could make Jacob's life a little easier.

"Note: We already hit our 100k goal, but the site stopped allowing some people to donate, and they emailed asking us to bump the goal. So we bumped it to 500k. We do not know how large expenses will be, but are very grateful for your generosity to my brother and his family," Mortensen said.
